structured flow series: hanging wave

For this piece i will be creating a wave from pieces of found wood. I will be hanging the wood to make a wave form from a collection of twigs. i originally wanted to have a variety of wood in my piece but over this week of "wood hunting" as i've been calling it, i realized that i have only been attracted to twigs and broken branches of trees. i find them a lot more aesthetically pleasing from all the other woods i have seen. with having wood that falls under the same category the pieces i found vary in shape, size, movement, and texture. now that i have my material for the next week i will be prepping my pieces by striping some and staining all the wood a red toned stain.

I've made many sketches and a mock-up model of the sculpture and i think it will fit very well with the series i will be making in this class. this piece has a lot of structure but the flow will be seen with the form these structural pieces will create. im very excited for this piece to come together i think it will be a very successful piece.

Visions for senior year

This year I want to work three dimensional. I am very interested in working with wood in many different ways. I also want to explore water as an inspiration. Wood has always been a material that i have been comfortable with but i have never really used in art. my two favorite artist Maya Lin and Reuban Margolin use wood regularly and i really want to explore what my heros have seemed to master for so long. working with wood will help me with my senior grant because i do plan on making small houses out of wood to place around the city to put information in for homeless teens. by working with wood for studio art it will push my carpentry skills to make well crafted mini houses for my senior grant so I'm very excited to work with wood for a good amount of time making pieces I've always imagine i would make.

WHIBWAIG

I am inspired by the ocean.
as an artist I used to depict my inspirations two dimensionally, and relay on color to make it clear what I am trying to create. To show where I have been as an artist I did what i used to do as an artist, I drew the waves, I used blues and greens to make sure the it was clear what was on the page. To show where I'm going as a artist, or at least where I am today I have change my understanding of how to use an inspiration and how to create a good conceptual piece. I went three dimensionally and I used the many strips of paper, ribbons and strips of wood to show how water moves and how it intertwines and flows. I wanted to show how water is structured, connected yet free.

I chose the very muted colors because I wanted to to focus on the form rather then color which can been distracting. I used very raw materials because I didnt want techniques to take away from the message. Lastly I decided to not plan out each wave so it seemed more organic to accurately depicted the ocean .
