Reflection (dec. 20th 2010) [armature]

this week my group and i finished the plastering on our creature. i think our process has been good, but not the speed and quality i am used to. working alone allows me to work cleaner but with a group i know i can run everything, so I'm more lenient in working. i have plastered before so i haven't learned much from plastering over this week. i would love to refine this piece but my group seems satisfied with the form and i cant change it, if everyone els likes what they have created. next steps are color. we are using tissue to create the look of scales and i think it will end up looking very cool. im really excited for this part of the project.

inspiration Artist (traditional aboriginal artist): Rover Thomas

Thomas is an aboriginal artist that did most of his art in the 1970s. I had the honor of seeing a couple of his pieces while i was in Australia this past summer. His work was vet powerful in person, he works in a very large scale and he often has the story of struggle in his pieces. when seeing his pieces i knew that would be a part of the trip that i never forget. He was an amazing artist.  

Reflection (dec. 13th 2010) [armature]

This week my group and i worked really well in completing our armature. We have come with a good unspoken system in plastering out creature. we have a really good flow and i think its coming out really well. I believe we have a good process and will finish in time for deadlines. Now that we are about 70% covered with our armature we have a good idea of how it will com out which is leading to a good completion. as soon as we finish covering the sculpture we will go on to another compete layer to have a smooth surface and a hard shell for our creature to build off of once we add color. with plastering this armature i have come to be more aware of craft verses how fast things are done. With this week ahead we are planning on finishing plastering to have a complete hard cover and to start the planning on the way we want to cover the creature with color. 

Reflection (dec. 6th 2010) [armature] - group project

My group and i have a common fascination with the unknown, and mysterious creatures that Urban legends. we came with the idea of a man that has gone through some kind of  accident and he came out looking like a mix of a fish, frog, and octopus. I'm not quit sue who came with the idea but as a group we worked together to form the story, the story started to flow quit smooth after a while. so for our project we are creating one. a creature that was once a man and now comes out of puddles when it rains, he is a mix between fish and frog and octopus. he is a strange looking creature but we want him to look odd so the viewer can wonder. this week we have worked on the armature of the sculpture, his skeleton. Kassa and I have worked with wood together many time, building in barns so we work well together and we have made great progress in this creature's body. we had many trial and error stages, and we are learning from these things. with the adding then removing of nails and wood parts it gets a little aggravating but we worked through it. we have learned a lot with how wood works in sculpture opposed to building a chicken coop. as a group we worked a lot with chicken wire, something i have never used to sculpt with before, its an interesting material and it did hurt at times but it does describe the form well, with the many fins and testicles we have made with this material we have grown to love the end results, so we can live with a few jabs and stabs from the chicken wire, if thats what it takes. i think my group and i learned a lot from this week, not only from the materials but how we work together. I'm excited to see how we continue to make our creature.  

Reflection (nov. 29th 2010) [dirt muse]

Muse: dirt

             This piece is inspired by dirt. I really like the different dips and dives dirt can make and i mimicked that with the wire. Showing the different levels of dirt shows the different purpose and to show that I gave many levels at different point. The form of the wire was formed to create how dirt really looks as well as it looks scientifically on how dirt is divided from sand dirt and clay.

             I learned how to work with wire webbing something I have never used before. It was very hard and it did hurt at some points but it was an interesting medium to work with. I used just my hands to form the wire. I then used scissors to cut different parts of the web to make the form at different points.

Pete Eckert is a blind photographer that lost his sight due to RP.  He was trained in sculpture and industrial design. "I slip photos under the door from the world of the blind to be viewed in the light of the sighted." - Pete Eckert. I am inpired by is triumps as a blind man as well as his amazing work as a visual artist.

Insperation Artist (Architecture): McBride Charles Ryan (Melbourne Australia)

I have always been inspired by architecture. Although historical buildings tend to draw me in more, McBride Charles Ryan modernize take on buildings. This firm is based in Melbourne Australia, and I have been to some of these building which makes me a bit more excited about this firm.

Reflection (nov. 22nd 2010) [tragedy muse]

Muse: Tragedy
This piece is inspired by the word tragedy. I chose to cubes because I believe that they depict unity. To show tragedy I made a explosion coming from one of the cube and as tragedy effects the other cubes. As tragedy does in real life, it effect others around it. As the cubes spread out the explosions debris on the other cubes lessen. In disasters and tragedies people and things that aren't directly in the tragedy, can be effected by it in some small way. In this piece I believe I depicted my muse of tragedy by showing the effects of one cube on the other 8 cubes.

I started this piece by creating the cube with the explosion. I then went with creating 3 cubes that were the same size as the first. I composed the 4 cubes into a square. I felt the piece was unfinished so I made 5 more cubes to make a 3 by 3 square of cubes. I then spread the effects of the exploding cube to the others and came to a better understanding of my concept. it took me a class period and a little extra time after school to finish this piece.

 Muses (What I learned from this week)

Muses have always been in my life, and have helped me a great deal in my artistic life. Muses find me and help in the concept phase of my creating. Although, the form of my pieces I have to go and find my muse. Muses are always there to help whether that muse being so obvious or not. With this week i have become more aware of muses, i have always known they were there but putting a name on it makes then seem a lot more real. As an artist I will always encounter muses or some form of inspiration to create my work. Knowing the importance of muses has really helped me in the concept making part of my art.

Insperation Artist (painter) : Chuck Close

Chuck Close is an  American painter, and he was the one who inspired me to pick up a paint brush. He is an amazing realest painter that often uses unique techniques to produce his portraits.
